Q: What is the difference between an interior designer and an
interior decorator?
A: The terms "interior designer" and "interior decorator" are often used inter-
changeably, as if they were identical professions. However, the two are
different.
Interior Designers are professionally trained to create a functional and quality
interior environment. Qualified through education, experience and examination,
a professional interior designer can identify, research and creatively resolve
issues. It is their responsibility to perform a variety of tasks. From selecting
and specifying fixtures, furnishings, products, materials and colors, to managing
the construction and installation of a design, and even designing for
appropriate acoustics or removing walls for a new space.
Interior Decorators, on the other hand, are primarily concerned with surface
decoration. Decoration is often characterized as the furnishing or adorning of
a space. Yes, interior designers do that as well, but the biggest difference is that
the interior designer has the formal education, experience, and affiliations ~
such as being an allied member of The American Society of Interior Designers
(ASID). Our interior designer has such.
Q: How do I know if I need an interior designer?
A: Your time may be very limited, leaving no free time to coordinate and/or shop
for home decor items. You begin to feel overwhelmed by the choices available,
or not quite sure where to start. Perhaps you've purchased a few nice items,
but need assistance in pulling it together. You thought decorating was suppose
to be fun and this is not fun!
Q: What's the design process like?
A: Whether you need a one-time design consultation, have a large project in mind
or your plans are somewhere in between ~ Re.Create Interiors can help!
The first step is to meet with you, ask questions, and listen. We take the time to
introduce ourselves and let you know how our level of expertise can best serve
you. We then together map out a design plan based on your needs and budget.
Normally, this all takes place in the comfort of your home.
You are in control regarding how involved you wish to be in the design process.
Working with a designer requires open communication and trust. We have
found the two to be key ingredients in every successful designer-client
relationship.
Q: Can I afford to hire an interior designer?
A: Most likely the answer is, Yes! Surprisingly, the overall cost of a project is
typically less than what it would have been had the client NOT hired a
professional. You'll save time and money given that a trained designer has
first-hand knowledge and established business connections. They make it
easy for you to avoid all the headaches that come with making costly
mistakes.
Q: How should I prepare my first meeting with you?
A: The heart of any good design project is your own wants and needs. So, the
first thing you should do is get "centered". This means having a clear vision
of how you want your home to look and feel. You can do this by writing down
your thoughts or collecting pictures from magazines, books, and other sources
of decor. The goal is to make your home aesthetically pleasing, while the role
of the designer is to facilitate the process.
